This section guides you through getting started with Matter Utilities, from app installation and device connection to basic operations like controlling lights and checking device information.
Installation
Where to download
You can download the Matter Utilities for free on the App Store:
Supported Platforms
- OS version:
- iOS 17 or later (Recommendation: Use the latest iOS for best performance)
- MacOS
- Devices: iPhone, iPad, MacBook, iMac, Mac mini
Permissions & Prerequisites
To ensure Matter Utilities works accurately and efficiently, please check the following:
- Bluetooth: Required for device discovery and pairing.
- Wi-Fi: The network must be on the 2.4 GHz band
- Local Network access: Allow the app to access your local network when prompted.
Pair your first device
Pairing Guide
There are 3 options for pairing your devices:
QR code over Wifi/Thread
- Open the Matter Utilities app.
- On the home screen, tap Add device now.
- Scan the QR code of your Matter device using the camera app

- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete commissioning.
Setup without QR Code
- On the home screen, tap Add device now.
- Choose the “Setup without QR Code“ option
- Fill in the pairing code in the blank > Then click Next

NFC Tag
- On the home screen, tap Add device now.
- Choose the “Pairing by NFC Tag“ option
- Follow the guide to connect NFC Tag shown on the screen app

Once pairing is successful, you’re ready to explore and use all the app’s features.
Troubleshoot device pairing
If your device isn’t responding or fails to pair, let’s try the following steps:
- Check power and range
- Make sure the device is powered on and within range of your Wi-Fi or Thread network.
- Restart or reset the device
- Turn the device off and back on
- Reset the commissioning window
- If necessary, perform a factory reset according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Verify network connection
- Connect your phone to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Temporarily disable VPN or custom network configurations.
- If your router has run out of IP addresses for new devices, try restarting it.
- Update software
- Ensure the Matter Utilities app is up to date.
- Check for firmware or OS updates on the device.

Quick Check
After pairing, you should perform light control steps to verify that the device is working correctly and inspect its information to ensure everything is functioning properly.
Basic Controls
Verify that Matter Utilities can send commands to control the light's state.
Steps:
- Select the Device
From the main dashboard, tap on your newly paired Matter Light device to enter the Device Details screen.

- Toggle Power:
Navigate to the Control tab
- Use the On/Off switch to toggle the light On and Off.

Expected Outcome: The physical light should respond immediately.
- Adjust Brightness: If your device supports dimming, locate the Level Control slider.
- Adjust the slider to set a specific brightness level (e.g., to 50% or 100%).
Expected Outcome: The light intensity should change accordingly.
Quick sanity checks
After confirming control, verify that the device is correctly exposing its functionality data model (endpoints and clusters) to the utility.
Steps:
- Check the Info Tab: Navigate to the Info tab within the Device Details screen.
- Verify Endpoints: Confirm the device's main Endpoint is listed (typically Endpoint 1 for the primary light function).

- Validate Clusters: Expand the relevant Endpoint (e.g., Endpoint 1) and confirm the mandatory clusters are present and accessible
